Mount Kenya, Nanyuki, Sirimon Route

Tour Description

Sirimon is the driest of the main approaches to Mount Kenya and the gentlest underfoot, climbing the north-western side through forest and heathland before opening into the Mackinder Valley below the main peaks. Over five days you work up from Nanyuki to Point Lenana at 4,985m, the trekking summit of the second highest mountain in Africa, reached at dawn on the fourth morning.

Three nights on the mountain, at Old Moses and Shipton’s, is what makes the difference: the ascent is spread out enough for your body to adjust before summit night. There is no technical climbing involved, only fitness and the discipline to walk slowly. Park fees, full board on the mountain, porters, a skilled cook, treated water, an English-speaking mountain guide and your summit certificate are all included.

Detailed Itinerary

Your Ziwaland Holidays guide meets you at the airport or your hotel for breakfast and a full briefing on the trek. You then travel from Nairobi by shared transport, with a private transfer available at extra cost, reaching Nanyuki, the base town for the mountain, in the late afternoon. Check in and use what is left of the day to start acclimatising and to sort your gear. Dinner and overnight at Simba’s Hotel.

After breakfast you drive an hour to the Sirimon gate at 2,440m. From there the track winds uphill through forest, which gives way to heathland after about three hours. Roughly three and a half hours from the gate it veers right to Old Moses Camp at 3,300m. Dinner and overnight.

You follow the track uphill, forking left at the junction. About an hour out of Old Moses it crosses the Ontulili River; go right, contouring through the moorland and crossing Liki North, then climb steadily into the Mackinder Valley, which opens out with the main peaks standing at its head. Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Camp, 4,200m.

A 3am start up a steep stony quarry cutting through a cliff, with the ground opening towards Lower Hall Tarns, reaching Point Lenana at 4,985m at around 6:30am, roughly three hours of climbing. You take the sunrise from the top, then descend two hours to Shipton’s for breakfast and continue down to Old Moses at 3,300m. Dinner and overnight.

A descent of about two hours to the park gate, where transport meets you for Nanyuki town and your shared transfer back to Nairobi.
