Tour Description

Our longest cross-border itinerary, and the one with room to spare. Eight parks and reserves across two countries in fourteen days means full days in the richest areas rather than a single night in each and a lot of driving in between. The Kenyan half covers the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru and its rhino sanctuary, Lake Naivasha with Hell’s Gate, and Amboseli under Kilimanjaro.

Crossing at Namanga, the Tanzanian half works through Lake Manyara, down into the Ngorongoro Crater, across two full days in the Serengeti, and finishes among the baobabs of Tarangire. Drinking water, three meals a day on safari, all park entrance fees, two nights in Arusha on bed and breakfast and return transport from Nairobi are included.

Detailed Itinerary

The day opens with collection from the airport or your hotel, breakfast and a full safari briefing from your guide. You then set off for the Maasai Mara, stopping at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint and for lunch in Narok. A game drive on arrival, then dinner and overnight at your lodge.

You leave after breakfast with a picnic lunch for a full day in the reserve. Rolling savannah grassland and an unusually dense network of tracks are what make the Mara so good for close-range viewing and photography, particularly of the big cats. Lunch at Hippo Pool, watching for hippo and crocodile. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

An early morning balloon flight can be arranged at extra cost.

There is an optional Maasai village visit after breakfast, paid directly at the village. You then leave for Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving in time for dinner and overnight at your lodge or hotel.

A morning game drive in the park. Nakuru was established to protect endangered species and holds both black and white rhino, along with colobus monkey, leopard, Rothschild’s giraffe and a range of plains antelope; the bird list runs to around 400 species. Late in the afternoon you drive on to Naivasha for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast you drive to Hell’s Gate for registration. You can cycle or drive it, as this is one of the few Kenyan parks where you are allowed among the wildlife on foot. Olkaria and Hobley’s, two extinct volcanoes, sit within the park, along with obsidian left by cooled lava. The gorge runs between red cliffs past the plugs known as Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower, with a smaller gorge to the south dropping to hot springs. Hot lunch on the road, then the long drive south to Amboseli, arriving in the evening for dinner and overnight.

A full day of game drives with picnic lunches. The swamps hold elephant and hippo in numbers, plains game and antelope work the drier ground, and the birdlife is heavy. Kilimanjaro appears when the cloud lifts, usually early or late. Dinner and overnight at camp.

You leave Amboseli after breakfast for Namanga with lunch en route. Immigration formalities at the border, then on to Arusha, arriving during the day to check into your hotel.

Collection after breakfast and the drive west with lunch on the way, then an afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Tree-climbing lions and large flamingo flocks are what it is known for, though the groundwater forest below the escarpment also holds elephant, buffalo and blue monkey. Dinner and overnight at the lodge or campsite.

A game drive on the way out, then the climb to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with lunch en route, arriving in the afternoon. The rim gives you your first look down onto the crater floor. Dinner and overnight at the camp or lodge.

Down onto the crater floor this morning for a few hours among the densest concentration of wildlife on the circuit, then a picnic lunch below. The afternoon takes you back up the rim road and on to the Serengeti, arriving by evening for dinner and overnight.

A full day across the plains with picnic lunches carried with you. The big cats share this ground with spotted hyena and with the predators most people never notice, among them the serval and the aardwolf. Dinner and overnight at your lodge or campsite.

You leave the Serengeti after breakfast for Tarangire, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon game drive introduces a park most circuits skip: baobabs several centuries old, and elephant herds among the densest in Tanzania, drawn in by the Tarangire River through the dry season. Dinner and overnight at your lodge or campsite.

A final morning game drive in Tarangire, then the drive to Arusha with lunch on the way. Dinner and overnight at your hotel, closing the Tanzanian leg of the safari.

Breakfast, then transfer to the shuttle terminal for the bus back to Nairobi. You arrive in the afternoon and are dropped at your hotel or the airport. If Zanzibar is your next stop we can drop you at Arusha airport instead.
