Every animal here arrived because something went wrong. The Nairobi Animal Orphanage, opened by the Kenya Wildlife Service in 1964, takes in orphaned, injured and abandoned wildlife from across the country, treats them, and returns to the wild any that can survive on their own.
Those that cannot stay on as residents, usually lion, leopard, cheetah, serval, hyena, baboon, buffalo, warthog and an assortment of monkeys and birds. What makes the visit worth your morning is the keepers, who know each animal’s history and will tell it to you. Children take to it immediately, and most adults leave having learned more than they expected. Entrance fees, hotel pick-up and drop-off, drinking water and a professional guide are included.
